A learning organization is one which grows organically, learning from itself and adapting on the move. The theory of this concept, defined by Peter Senge in The Fifth Discipline: The Art and Practice of the Learning Organization, states that the successful organization is comprised of people cooperating dynamically in order to continually adapt, learn and grow in response to changes in the environment. Naturally, this indicates that there is a synergistic learning occurring above and beyond the individual learning by people within the organization as a part of their work. Systems thinking is the “fifth discipline” (the other four being personal mastery, mental models, shared vision and team learning) as it brings together the other disciplines to benefit business. The true learning organization is redesigning itself constantly.
